A&P supermarkets are among a growing number of retail grocers that offer a small discount if the customer uses his or her own bag, rather than one supplied by the store. You'd think that the whole point of this discount is to avoid giving out bags, be they paper or plastic.
Thus, you'd also think that A&P would offer this discount for carrying out a purchase by hand. After all, someone who does this is not taking a new bag from A&P. Such logic, however, does not reign there. Corporate policy, as confirmed by customer service at headquarters, is to deny the bag discount if the purchase is taken out by hand. They offer no explanation for the reasoning behind this.
