I am a kindergarten through fifth grade science specialist. I see about six classes
each day at 40 minutes each. I work with each grade level, helping teach the
science curriculum. The students tend to do more hands-on, experiential science
in the lab with me. I help the students use science notebooks and also provide
training to the regular classroom teachers on how to do the science notebook.
I have also worked with grade levels on their science curriculum. I meet with
them and work on how we can fit the science content into the projects that they do
at the end of the quarter. I have also planned science-themed field trips for som e
grades. I help maintain the school nature trail (which the students often use with
me) and organize one or two Saturdays during the year when parents come and

help clean the trail. Along with the nature trail, I work with the second grade on
planting a community vegetable garden.
I also coordinate all the science kits that the regular teachers use in their
classroom to teach science. This means that I order replacement parts and
obtain animals that are needed to teach the kit.
Best and Worst Parts
The best part of the job is working with the students helping them discover the
natural world: helping a kindergarten group, for example, to recognize a cardinal
or a robin by their song.
The worst part of the job is having to track down teachers who have not turned in
information or have not completed a task.
Tips
I would advise anyone going into teaching to spend as much time in a classroom
beforehand as they can. I would even suggest that you become a teacher's
assistant for a year before deciding to go into this field. This will give you a real
glim pse into teaching. I would also suggest sticking it out for at least four years.
After your fourth year of teaching, it gets so much easier. You know how to read
the students better, you have learned to tweak lessons.

The best part about being a Physical Education teacher is that you get to "play"

with the kids all day and you get to wear shorts, t-shirts and sweats every day. On

days without students you will find that the other teachers are dressing like you

and making comments about how nice it m ust be to wear comfortable clothes all

day! The most rewar ding part of this job however is that on any given day you

may introduce an activity or game that will give a student a skill, passion or love

that may last a lifetime.

The worst part of becoming a PE teacher is sometimes the lack of respect you

receive from other teachers in the building. Some teachers feel that because the

students WANT to come to your classroom, it is easier in terms of discipline and

everyday operations. Although it is true that the kids LOVE to come to gym, it still

takes a strong teacher with an organized and strict environment to keep the

students safe and focused.

1. The first piece of advice I give to any student teacher is to get as much "real

life" experience as you can. An excellent teacher makes classroom management

look easy and there is only one college course focused on discipline and

classroom management, so before you get out there for yourself and fall hard, get

that classroom, coaching, camp, daycare or any other kind of experience you can

and if you come across some awesome teachers, ask them to mentor you and

train you in their classrooms.

2. The next piece of advice I give to all aspiring teachers is to get your substitute

license before you student teach because when you complete your hours and

there is still a month of school left, your cooperating teacher may ask you to

substitute or you may find another opportunity before the new year even begins.

3. The third piece of advice I would give is to keep a book of all the lesson plans

you developed in the course of your college career and always explore the

internet and PE websites for additional materials so that you have the information

in one place when you land that first job or as you spend your time as a

substitute.

As an elementary PE teacher, I am responsible for introducing a variety of

activities and games that students can incorporate into a lifetime of physical

fitness and activity.

On a typical day I start with m eetings or planning time until about a half hour

before school when I am responsible for watching the children on the playground

who are dropped off before the bell rings. As my teaching day starts, I will see 5-7

classes in a course of a day for 45 m inutes at a time. This schedule allows the

majority of my day to be spent on essential tasks rather than administrative tasks.

Administrative tasks can include professional development, staff meetings or day

to day operations such as lesson plans, lesson research, making copies or

arranging for special events, presentations or speakers.

This year I had to incorporate travel time into my schedule as enrollment at our

elementary school decreased and enrollment at a nearby middle school

increased. This was the first time I had a job share assignment, but it required an

extra 30 minutes out of m y eight hour day for travel that took essential teaching

time away from the students. One of the downfalls of becoming a PE teacher

rather than a classroom teacher is that more and more schools are forced to

make hard choices with the budget and often times "specials" such as PE, music

and art are the first to go. On the other hand, there is no other job in the building

that allows you to play all day and wear what most people get comfortable in after

work every day!

I love the children. But the class material is interesting too and I am always

learning something. It keeps me in touch with the Spanish-speaking community

and allows me to maintain my mastery of the language. Parents are great

sources of information and I love learning from them. But the work load is heavy

and, with correcting and planning, the after-school hours are surprisingly long.

Tips

Take a classroom management course. Become certified in English as a second

language. Collaborate with other teachers in the school. Learning from

experienced teachers can help you tremendously. Engage the parents in the

learning process. They love the classroom and will lend their support to your

efforts.

Additional Information

You need to be patient and caring but firm and outspoken in your objectives. A

teacher has to establish clear expectations for her students in order to persuade

them to succeed. They should not be forced to guess what you want from them.

Still, you need to temper your firmness with a generosity of spirit that your kids will

respond to.

I now teach Spanish to grades 1-8 in a parochial school. I prepare lessons,

administer assessments and teach grammar and culture. I also work on the

diocesan foreign language committee. It is very interesting work: developing a

curriculum and collaborating with other language professionals.

But I have other more mundane duties too. I serve as a recess monitor, do

faculty room upkeep and have to be around for "extra help" sessions at the end of

the day. There are fun projects too, now and then, projects that the teachers

come up with that are meant to benefit the entire school: spelling bees,

geography bees, "It's Academ ic" or the yearbook.

The best part of my job is also the worst part: the children. It is an awesom

responsibility working with sm all children who can be so easily crushed, but not

necessarily so easily motivated. The sum total of their needs is a heavy burden.

Yet when one of them really gets something (the "ah ha!" moment), there is not a

better feeling in the world. It is too bad it comes infrequently. We have more and

more curriculum to teach each year, with little or no assistance; often I feel like it

is me against a big indifferent world. I com pete with quick bursts of high

stimulation (e.g. video games) and must be accountable for the fact that real

learning is not like that!

Tips

1.) Spend as much time in the classroom as possible before you begin your

teaching career. Make sure it appeals to you, choose the age level that seems to

"fit", and be sure you love children and academics.

2.) Do not accept the current philosophy that teaching is an easy job of "only" six

hours a day and 9 months of the year! Do NOT become a teacher for the

summer vacation!

3.) Do NOT give up after your first year. It is a very strenuous and frustrating time

that you just have to get through. It is MUCH better with experience! Try not to

give up ANY year, though many may be difficult. Believe in what you do, and try

to make it better each time.

It is very difficult but rewarding to take the academic content you wish to teach,

filter it down to the age and ability level of each of your students, and then say

and model and show it as many different ways as necessary for the students to

get it. However, we do it constantly, and successfully!

I am the classroom teacher in a second grade inclusion classroom, receiving

assistance from a special needs teacher daily to help with students with

educational plans. I am responsible for teaching all the state standards in all the

subjects for all my students, who are also som etimes assisted by other specialists

like reading teachers, occupational therapists, and the psychologist. A large part

of the job is social training of the children, as I am charged to teach the children to

become successful participating members of society, and much of this is in

character education.

My day runs from tying shoes all the way through assisting the children to deal

with the death of a grandparent or pet, and all the steps in between. I live with my

21 students for 9 months, and understand a great deal of what is important to

them. I must handle each individual and often each incident on a personal as well

as a group level. At various times of each day I must be the coach, the therapist,

the enforcer and one of the most important adults in their lives. I also handle their

academic lives on an individual basis, as each child may have a different learning

style, capacity, and motivation.

Where are the best places to find job listings online? You will certainly find numerous job listings on major job banks like Monster, CareerBuilder and HotJobs. However, every other job seeker is looking for positions on these job sites, too. So, be sure to check all the sites with job listings.

Monster, for example, has thousands of job postings. They also have millions of registered users, and millions of posted resumes. One recruiter I spoke to recently told me that he received close to four hundred resumes within a few days of posting on Monster. That's a lot of competition for every job!

Are you using the help wanted classified ads when you look for jobs? If not, you should be. Local and regional employers don't always post on the major jobs sites like Monster or HotJobs. Instead, they will advertise in their local newspaper to avoid being overwhelmed with applicants and, in many cases, because they are not interested in paying relocation costs.

Use Local Job Search Resources

First, use local search resources. Sounds simple, doesn't it? But, it does make sense. Our local Chamber of Commerce web site, for example, has been an excellent resource for job seekers in my town. Employers that are members of the Chamber of Commerce can post job opportunities free and those local job listings are often posted on the web site before they are advertised elsewhere. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has a directory you can use to find your local Chamber.

Craig's List is another excellent source for finding local job listings.

Use the Job Search Engines

Using a job search engine site is an excellent way to find local job listings. Use the type of job you are interested in as a keyword, then enter your city, state and zip code to find local jobs. Advanced search options will enable you to refine your local job search even further, and search by company, words in the job title, and the radius from a city or zip code.

Check the Classifieds

The next step in conducting a local job search is to check your local newspaper classified ads on a daily basis. Many newspapers are affiliated with CareerBuilder, but, not all are and some small to mid-size employers only advertise locally. Most local newspapers are available online. Use this Online Newspapers directory to find your local and regional newspapers.

Check Local Job Listings

Use our Jobs by State directory to access the job and career resources for the region, state or city you're interested in. America's Job Bank contains Department of Labor listings for all 50 states. Many employers post local jobs directly with the Department of Labor office in their state. The database currently contains almost 1,300,000 jobs, and is searchable by job title and location. You can register and post your resume, create cover letters, track your job search, and develop a personal online career account.

Check the top job banks, as well. Monster and the other job banks do contain local job listings and users can search by zip code or city/region.

Read the News

Be aware of the latest business news in the community you're interested in. American City Business Journals contains information on business in a variety of cities. Each journal is updated weekly and should be required reading for anyone interested in the pulse of the local business community including new businesses, expansions and cut-backs.

Find Companies

Use the Verizon Yellow Pages to search for local companies by keyword and/or location. You may find potential employers that you didn't know about. Then visit the company's web site to review job openings and career information.

An argument could be made for not relying solely on the top job sites based on the fact that millions of other job seekers are using them. However, because these sites are the most visited and have the most job postings it is still worth incorporating them into your job search.

Here are the top sites, along with a brief description of what you will find. Some sites require you to register, others let you search without signing-up. Job seekers can post their resume and apply directly online. Most sites offer job search agents so you can sign-up to have new listings that meet your criteria sent via email. Job search technology has changed significantly over the years. It has moved from job databases to job search engines that search the listings for you, to sites that match you with jobs like Realmatch, sites where you can network like LinkedIn and Facebook, and sites like RiseSmart that offer a concierge service (for a fee) that will screen jobs for you.

Job searching is getting more focused and targeted and that's a good thing for job seekers. Given the number of jobs posted online, even when there are less job postings than there used to be, new technology that helps you refine your searches and find jobs that are a strong match for your skills is a welcome addition to the mix.

It's important to stay on top of the trends in online job searching and adjust your job searching techniques accordingly. That's not easy to do, but it's definitely manageable. My weekly Job Search newsletter is a good way to stay informed about the resources that are available for job seekers.

Quality vs. Quantity

Another factor is in play here, and it's an important one for job seekers. A recent online recruitment survey of 3200 Human Resources professionals conducted by Realmatch, the job site that takes job seekers skills and qualifications and matches them with jobs posted by employers, found that companies are using alternatives like pay for performance job sites, which charge employers only after they review candidates and opt to contact them.

In fact, Rafael Cosentino, Realmatch's Vice President, Business Development, told me that both job seekers and employers are dissatified. Cosentino says, "It's a very daunting task to ask someone to type a magic word into an empty search box; both employers and job seekers get stumped here. Not only do they get stumped, they often complain about the results they get. Weeding through unqualified listings or resumes is among the largest complaints by job seekers and employers."

Over 68% of survey respondents said that they were not satisfied with mainstream job site technology, pricing, or models and want something new. Close to 75% of respondents state that resume databases do not uncover quality candidates, while 66% of those surveyed said online job boards don't provide a quality service to job seekers and employers.

Quality vs. Quantity

Another factor is hiring managers prefer fewer quality candiates than a large volume of applications from non-qualified candidates. When you're recruiting, less is better, if you can ensure that the pool of candidates meets your hiring needs. That's one reason that companies post on local sites like Craig's List - there's less exposure so you get fewer candidates, but more from the geographic area where you want to hire from.

Pay for Performance Job Postings

It's also a reason that employers are moving towards pay for performance sites like Realmatch. Employers post jobs for free, then view a graded and ranked list of pre-qualified candidates. They pay only to contact the candidates they are interested in. Again, there are less applicants, but more candidates that meet the hiring specifications for the job.

Have you noticed fewer job postings when you're searching the job boards? Barron's reported that Monster's job postings were down 18% in April and 21% in May. Overall, The Conference Board reported that online job postings dropped 13% in May. Some of it is, of course, due to the difficult economy and less hiring in a soft job market.

That's only part of what's happening. There is also a trend towards actively recruiting candidates on professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Which is why it's important to make sure employers can find you when you're job searching.

Think you've got what it takes to rise to the top as a woman in information technology?

Here is a list of the top soft skills and attributes you should possess if you're a female who wants to be successful in your technical career of choice. This list is adapted from the results of a study, titled Senior Technical Women: A Profile of Success, which was published by the Anita Borg Institute for Women in Technology (ABI).

Ability to Ask the Right Questions and Willingness to Learn: Inquisitiveness is critical to the process of problem-solving, learning from one's mistakes and advancing. When problem-solving, the individual must dig for answers and set aside preconceived notions before he or she can derive a solution. The individual must also be open and able to absorb new information and apply it to whatever he or she is working on. Almost 78 percent of senior technical women perceive themselves as questioners, compared to 77 percent of senior technical men who say the same about themselves, the study found.

Collaborative Skills: High-tech innovation relies on collaboration - the ability to work with others as part of a team in order to achieve a common goal. The collaboration process typically involves building relationships, exchanging information, reaching a consensus on a decision or action, and working with others to resolve a conflict. Not only is collaboration critical to success, but it can also provides a sense of career satisfaction. Just over 84 percent of senior technical women view themselves as strong collaborators, the study found.

Willingness to Work Hard and Put In Long Hours: This is just a reality for pretty much anyone who is immersed in the high-tech culture, which tends to demand increased responsibility and availability of people who want to climb the ladder. Women who have family responsibilities and desire work-life balance may find this requirement to be a barrier to advancement, the study concluded. Seventy-two percent of senior technical women surveyed said they had to cut back on sleep so they could advance their careers, and close to one-third of respondents said they have delayed having children.

Openness to Risk-Taking: True leadership involves being willing to strive for a goal or pursue a certain path, even if the certainty of success is not 100 percent. The study found that more than half of senior technical women view themselves as risk-takers, and are equally as likely as senior technical men to perceive themselves as such.

Assertiveness: In the high-tech world, people are rewarded for speaking up, promoting themselves, being ambitious and projecting self-confidence. However, since these are traditionally viewed as "male" traits in the North American culture, many women find that they are viewed negatively if they demonstrate assertiveness; on the flip-side, they may be passed over for promotions, ignored, interrupted or viewed as "too quiet" if they are not assertive enough, the study found

Analytical Skills: Analytical skills include include the ability to think logically about an issue and solve a problem. Now, keep in mind gross is definitely not profit- i.e. that is not all my money. However, this was still a banner week for my agency, GardenWall Publications LLC, as I have never seen such large numbers on my spreadsheet.

Of course, the number one thought/question is How? and I've answered it in past posts, but here is my summary:

add moere services. My agency now provides writing, editing and translation. It started out as solely as a writing venture. At about 1.5 years in I added editorial services. This year I added English-Spanish translation.

A couple days ago, I told you about a turning point in my freelance writing career that actually happened while I was camping one summer. Turns out, I tend to have many turning points while camping. Hmmm.

Here is another one:

I found out I had been selected for About.com's training program, known as "Prep." Running this site at About.com has been one of the best parts of my career, and I'm not only talking about the steady income that is so integral to succeeding as a freelance writer, but also about the industry contacts and job offers that it nets me. And I knew, even then, the opportunity that was presented to me.

Well, imagine my annoyance when I found out my Prep training (a grueling process during which I'd have to compete with other potential hires for this job) was scheduled during...(guess)...a camping trip!

Yet, I knew that a steady gig with a steady paycheck was likely the ticket to freelance writing success. So, despite the complications, I brought along my laptop, and gave my all to the Prep training. This included late nights of composing articles in a notebook (again, in my trusty camper), and hours of laptop work using the WiFi at the local McDonalds. (Yes, I smelled like a french fry).

This particular campground didn't include the modern wonder known as WiFi, and I shuffled. Perhaps this wasn't the job for me. Perhaps I'd have to back out of Prep. The camping trip had been planned for some time, and included a group of friends who I did not want to jilt.

Sure, I missed some of the camping trip, but here I am years later with an ever-growing site, thousands of friends/writers/contacts and a steady gig that pays the mortgage.

As you can see, dreams come in all shapes and sizes. They are often more attainable than you would think. Monitor their Job Performance

Just because your students now have jobs doesn't mean you can just sit back and take it easy while they perform their duties. Watch their behavior closely. If a student is not performing the job properly, conference with him or her and tell the student exactly what you need to see in their performance. If things don't improve, it might be time to consider "firing" them. If their job is essential, you will need to find a replacement. Otherwise, simply give the "fired" student another chance during the next cycle of job assignments. Don't forget to schedule a certain time each day for the jobs to be performed; I schedule it for the last 5-10 minutes of the day when we assign homework, pack up, and dismiss for the end of the day. That's about it! As you can see, classroom jobs are a wonderful way to teach responsibility and build a sense of classroom community. With the use of job applications, you are also giving the students practice at filling out forms, which is an academic standard in many districts

Army Enlisted Job (MOS) Descriptions
The Army calls their enlisted jobs MOSs, or "Military Occupation Specialties." The Army has around 190 MOSs available for enlisted Soldiers.
